This program was created to address the problem with littering in public areas including our neighborhoods. We decided to work with local schools to encourage and teach kids about the problems and affects of littering. We invited local waste management department representatives to talk about where trash goes and how it affects our streets when drains are clogged with litter. We asked the students to sign pledges to not litter as well as challenging them to ask their families to do the same. We created signs that featured our slogan, "Stop Trashing Our Kids' Futures."
We all know about peer pressure. Our Being Fit Is Legit program created a safe place for students who enjoyed walking, hiking and playing outdoors, but who felt like "outsiders" for not being like the crowd and for wanting to do something different. We held seminars, attended community festivals and performed exertion demonstrations to encourage regular exercising. We even shared a diseased lung with a group of middle schoolers to show them the affects of smoking. Every activity and program initiative was tailored toward being healthy and active.
Because our son played organizational youth sports, we were of course a part of the parents who had to provide snacks for the children of the teams. After only a short while we noticed that many of the kids hadn't had a meal of much substance all day before coming to after school practices. We witnessed exhaustion and headaches. We created a program and received in-kind donations from local grocery stores to bring more health snacks to the kids. We hosted snack making classes with the interested parents and made sure the student athletes got more than just the empty calories found in a bag of sugary treats and salty potato chips. Parents began providing fruit like grapes and oranges, and several nights we would coordinate hearty meals like spaghetti for the tired students.
